New Years Eve with the Smoking Popes
The Smoking Popes played a great mix of songs at Durty Nellies in Palatine last night.

Songs in the set ranged from their oldest material (Inoculator 7" from 1991) to their newest (Stay Down from 2008), even including a Josh Caterer solo acoustic performance of his Duvall song, "Racine".  A nice treat in the middle was the title track from their upcoming 7" compilation, Long Day.

At one point a drunk woman could be heard yelling at her man, "If they don't play something I know soon we are so out of here."  The crowd was clearly there to make the most of the night, and the open bar.  Though there was a good sized group in front of the stage that was clearly there for the band, singing along word for word with Josh.

All in all the band was clearly on top of their game and their performance of "Auld Lang Syne," at Midnight (according to the large clock Josh brought on stage in an effort to not miss Midnight as they had done at aprevious New Years Eve show) brought the crowd together rocking in the new year.

This was my first Smoking Popes show in over a year and it left me excited for what 2010 has in store for the band, and what the band has in store for it's fans.
